What is Artificial Insemination?

It is an Assisted Reproduction procedure of low complexity which consists in placing sperm into the uterus through a catheter. A less invasive method than high complexity treatments, to increase the chances of fertilization.

The sperm sample can be provided by their partner or from a donor, giving single women, heterosexual couples and same-sex couples the possibility of having a baby.

Who is it recommended for?

Artificial insemination is most recommended for patients who may fall into one or more of the following categories:
-Men with low sperm count, motility and/or morphology
-Mild endometriosis problems
-Cervical mucus unfavourable to pregnancy
-Unknown causes of infertility
-Ovulation problems
-Preferably, women under 35

How is it done?

Generally, a specialist places sperm with the help of a catheter into the mother's uterus, previously prepared, through something known as 'sperm capacitation', with the aim of increasing the fertility levels of the sperm, facilitating fertilization, and leading to a pregnancy in the best scenario.
1.
Diagnosis
The first step is getting an updated, and accurate diagnosis, to determine whether artificial insemination is the right option.
2.
Ovarian stimulation
Ovarian stimulation is induced by the use of hormonal medication.
3.
Sperm capacitation
The semen sample, obtained from the partner or donor, is prepared.
4.
Insemination
The prepared semen sample is transferred to the uterus to facilitate fertilization, embryo formation and pregnancy.
