Azoospermia: Understanding the Absence of Sperm and the Available Solutions

Azoospermia, the absence of sperm in semen, is one of the most challenging causes of male infertility. At Ingenes, we are dedicated to providing effective solutions for couples facing this challenge on their path to parenthood.

What is Azoospermia?

Azoospermia is characterized by the complete absence of sperm in the ejaculate. It affects approximately 1% of all men and 10-15% of infertile men. This condition can be due to various causes, which fall into two main categories: obstructive and non-obstructive.

Obstructive Azoospermia vs. Non-obstructive

  • Obstructive azoospermia occurs when there is a blockage in the ducts that carry sperm.
  • Non-obstructive azoospermia is due to problems in sperm production.

Diagnosis of Azoospermia

Diagnosis begins with a detailed analysis of the semen. If no sperm are detected, additional tests, such as hormonal and genetic testing, are performed to determine the underlying cause.

Common Causes of Azoospermia

The causes of azoospermia may include genetic factors, hormonal factors, problems with the testicles, or a history of surgery or infections. Understanding the specific cause is essential to choosing the most appropriate treatment.

Treatments Available

There are various treatment options depending on the cause of azoospermia:

  • For obstructive azoospermia, surgical procedures such as Vasoepididymostomy or Microsurgical Sperm Aspiration (MESA) may be effective.
  • In cases of non-obstructive azoospermia, techniques such as Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE) may be an option.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Azoospermia

When sperm are recovered through surgical techniques, IVF with ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) is often the technique of choice. This allows direct fertilization of the egg with a sperm.

Emotional Support and Guidance

We understand that facing azoospermia can be emotionally challenging. At Ingenes, we offer emotional support and counseling to help couples navigate this journey.

Importance of Early Diagnosis

An early diagnosis of azoospermia is crucial. The sooner it is identified and treated, the better the chances of success in treating infertility.
