Eligender: Is it possible to choose your baby’s sex?

Being a mom is a wonderful stage, because children get to add more experiences and memories to your family, and many times being able to choose the sex of your baby is something unique, and today, with our Eligender program it is possible to do it.

We know it sounds a bit like science fiction, but do not worry, here we explain how we can do it and you will realize that it is nothing strange but science and a team of specialist professionals.

First of all, this sex selection technique is an exclusive service of Ingenes, it is a procedure that will allow you to choose the sex of your baby, through the analysis of genes located in the sex chromosomes (X and Y), whose presence or absence indicate the sex of the embryo.

And surely you are wondering what are the X and Y chromosomes? Well, let’s go back to our high school classes for a bit. When we talk about chromosomes we mean an organelle (let’s imagine a small microscopic organ) that is found in the core of a cell, which contains genetic material.

Now, a sex chromosome is a type of chromosome that participates in determining the sex, meaning,  knowing if it is going to be a boy or a girl. Humans have two sex chromosomes, X and Y. Women have two X (XX) chromosomes in their cells, while men have one X and one Y (XY).

Remembering that all eggs contain only one X chromosome, while sperm can contain an X or a Y chromosome. This means that it is the male who determines the sex of the baby when fertilization occurs and this is where the experience and scientific and technological advancement of Ingenes get united.

What is the procedure to choose your baby's sex?

Before starting to explain the process, it is necessary to bear in mind that this is only possible through In Vitro Fertilization. What does this mean? You will have to go through a treatment in which first you will get ovarian stimulation through medications, then a puncture, in which we extract the best quality eggs.

A fertilization where we join your eggs with the sperm of your partner or donor and this is where the sex selection process begins.

The technique begins with the biopsy of the embryos developed from In vitro Fertilization on day 3 or 5 of their development. From this, 1 to 15 cells are obtained and these have genetic material for analysis using advanced molecular biology techniques.

Then, the embryo biopsy is carried out in the IVF laboratory by an expert biologist in Assisted Reproduction and it does not affect the normal development of the embryo or its ability to implant.

After genomic analysis of the cells obtained from the biopsy performed on each embryo, the results indicate which embryos are female (XX) and which ones are male (XY). Based on these results and the desired gender by the parents, the embryos to be transferred will be chosen.

Who is it recommended for and why?
