Seminal infections

The seminal ducts are the tubes through which sperm travel from the testicles to the outside of the body. If there is an infectious process somewhere along this pathway, the sperm are forced to pass through the infected area, which can damage them and affect their ability to fertilise the egg.

Causes

Seminal infections can be caused by the presence of harmful micro-organisms in the prostate, seminal vesicles, vas deferens, epididymis and testicles. These micro-organisms are often transmitted during unprotected sexual intercourse.

Symptoms

because seminal infections rarely present with symptoms, it is common for them to remain unidentified for a long time and cause sequelae that can lead to infertility.

In some cases, seminal infections can cause:

Abnormal semen
Irritation
Itching
Burning during urination
Urethral discharge
Infertility

Diagnosis

It is advisable to see a medical specialist, who will perform the following diagnostic tests:

- Analysis of medical history
- Genital examination
- Sperm culture or microbiological control of semen.

Can I have a baby if I have seminal infections?

In most cases, seminal infections can be easily treated and cured with antibiotics.

In case of insufficient sperm quality, in vitro fertilization with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF+ICSI) is the treatment of choice to achieve pregnancy.
